Payer playbook
Cigna credentialing.
Cigna reads your CAQH profile only after you grant permission, and behavioral health belongs to Evernorth entirely. Miss either routing fact and the file sits.

The fast facts
What this payer actually requires
Entry path, medical
Cigna's provider portal for healthcare professionals
Credentialing runs through the CignaforHCP flow.
CAQH
Read with your permission
Cigna accesses an existing CAQH application electronically only when access is granted. No permission, no pull, no error message.
Stated timeline
45 to 60 days
Cigna's own published figure for credentialing.
Behavioral health
Evernorth Behavioral Health, a separate network
Behavioral clinicians contact Evernorth directly at 1-800-926-2273, not Cigna medical.
Recredentialing
Every 3 years in most states
Stated on Cigna's own credentialing pages.
Paper trap
W-9 and practice address must match the tax ID
A mismatch bounces the contract stage.
Cigna publishes one of the friendlier headline numbers in commercial credentialing, 45 to 60 days, and then quietly attaches the conditions that decide whether you ever see it. The first is permission: Cigna will read your existing CAQH application electronically, but only with your authorization. A profile that has not granted Cigna access does not produce an error or a letter. The electronic pull simply never happens, and the 45 day clock never starts.
The second condition is routing. Behavioral health at Cigna is not a department, it is a different network: Evernorth Behavioral Health, the renamed Cigna Behavioral Health, which credentials counselors, social workers, therapists, and psychologists directly and answers its own phone. A behavioral application sent through Cigna medical is not slow, it is in the wrong company's queue.
The third is duller and just as decisive: paperwork agreement. The W-9, the practice address, and the tax ID have to tell one consistent story, because a mismatch surfaces at the contracting stage and bounces the file back weeks. None of these three conditions is hard to satisfy. All three are easy to miss, and each one is invisible until the timeline has already slipped.
Where it goes wrong
What stalls Cigna applications
The permission that was never granted
Cigna's electronic access to your CAQH profile depends on you authorizing it, either globally or plan by plan. Skipped, the pull silently fails while everyone waits. We set global authorization and verify Cigna's access before the application goes anywhere.
Behavioral health filed with the medical plan
Evernorth is a separate entity with its own credentialing, its own contacts, and its own queue. Behavioral clinicians who apply through Cigna medical wait on a file that no one at Evernorth knows exists. Correct routing on day one is the whole game.
A tax identity that disagrees with itself
W-9 name, practice address, and tax ID that do not match freeze the contract stage. It is the least glamorous item on the checklist and one of the most common reasons a nearly finished file stops. We reconcile the tax paperwork before submission, not after the bounce.
Our process against theirs
How we run this payer
- 1
Authorize before applying.
CAQH profile completed, attested, and Cigna access granted, verified rather than assumed, so the electronic pull works the first time. - 2
Route by network.
Medical through Cigna's portal flow, behavioral health direct to Evernorth, decided by license and service mix before submission. - 3
Reconcile the tax story.
W-9, practice address, and tax ID checked for agreement, because contract stage bounces cost more time than the check ever does. - 4
Hold Cigna to its number.
The 45 to 60 day stated window tracked from complete submission, with status pursued and escalated when a file sits beyond it. - 5
Confirm through to payment.
Effective date, fee schedule, and first paid claims verified, and the three year recredentialing cycle plus CAQH attestation rhythm maintained from there.

Straight answers
How long does Cigna credentialing take?
Cigna's own stated figure is 45 to 60 days. You will find secondary sources quoting anywhere from 30 to 120, but the payer's number is the one worth planning around, and the practical way to hit it is a complete application with CAQH access granted before day one.
Does Cigna require CAQH?
Cigna works from your existing CAQH application, accessed electronically with your permission. The permission is the operative word: without it the transfer never happens. Granting global authorization in CAQH is the simplest way to keep this from silently stalling your file.
I am a therapist. Do I apply to Cigna?
You apply to Evernorth Behavioral Health, which is Cigna's behavioral network and a separate entity. Evernorth credentials behavioral clinicians directly. Applying through Cigna medical parks your file with the wrong company.
What documents trip up Cigna applications most?
The tax set. A W-9, practice address, or tax ID that disagrees with the others bounces the contracting step. Cigna's clinical requirements are standard; it is the administrative consistency that catches practices.
